Life in a dormitory. This place is one of the most memorable parts of any student’s life. This is a unique environment where you live with a lot of people, use a common kitchen, shower, toilet, and so on. Generally speaking, here a person must learn the ability to communicate with people, learn independence, self-care, and an important aspect, find friends. Each dorm is different, and so is life there. So let’s look at life in the MIU dormitory according to the students themselves.
Roommates: People of different nationalities live in almost every room. Some people like it and some don’t. The reason for this, according to student surveys, was, first, ignorance of each other’s language and difference in cultures, and second, misunderstanding or personal dislike for each other. Despite this, many students found a common language after a while and eventually became best friends.
Conflicts: Conflicts often arise from not expressing one’s personal preferences and from failure to agree on general rules. Well, just like in life, there are ordinary disagreements between students and sometimes they just get tired of each other.
Rules and responsibilities of students in the dormitory. There are many rules in the MIU dormitory, but they are all created for the safety of students. Many students don’t like them, especially the fact that the hostel closes at 11 pm. Specially appointed students monitor the order of the rules and if they do not listen to them and break the rules, they receive a fine. If more than ten fines are received, the student must immediately leave the dormitory.
Social life: The dorm is a great place to meet new people. Here you can find friends, neighbors and even future colleagues. Another good thing is that you can practice your English and learn about other cultures and religions. Even if you are an introvert, community life will force you to learn to be a more open and talkative person. And that’s great!
Activities: The MIU dorm often hosts various events, such as watching movies together with snacks, sports competitions, music day, celebrating holidays and playing various games.
Personal space and independence: Unfortunately, many students suffer from this because they get tired of people and want to be alone. This creates a high risk of stress and irritability. But every person also has to go through this in order to understand what adult life is, where not everything always happens the way you want it. The dorm helps students develop independence, learn to manage their time and budget. The first year is difficult because you find yourself in the unknown. Some students also have to earn money themselves, this makes their life even more difficult, but strengthens them.
Positives: Located next to the university. This is a big plus, but despite this, many students still manage to be late. Live with your best friend and take turns cooking. Do something together and help each other.
Negative aspects: “Crowded. Thin walls. Noise. Limited space. Bad repair. Few washing machines. Dirty and small kitchen for so many students.” This is how students described their dormitory.
In conclusion, I will say that despite the positive and negative aspects, students for the most part are glad that they are living life in the MIU dorm with their friends and getting to know new people. Yes, in its own way, life in the dorm is very difficult, but it is also very interesting and memorable as a student’s life.
