For many Mongolian International University (MIU) students, the decision to live abroad is the key to new opportunities and prospects. Studying English and an international diploma open doors to dream countries, but with this choice comes a new experience – the experience of being a foreigner. And most often, students choose countries based on career aspects. But besides this, there are many other things that determine success and comfort in a new country.
At MIU Gilgal café I had a meeting with Christian from Cameroon and Thor from Norway, who now live in Russia. Our conversation revealed seven important factors to consider when deciding to live abroad. They share their experiences and advice, emphasizing the importance of basic visa and immigration requirements, adapting to a new culture and language barrier, financial stability, and maintaining ties to your homeland.
Moving to another country is not only a desire for good money or a successful career, but also an opportunity to realize your highest goal. For Christian and Thor, this was the fulfillment of their mission – to help people in Russia. This goal became a compass guiding them to success, stability and family well-being, overcoming all difficulties and obstacles along the way.
Christian and Thor note that the process of obtaining a visa and residence permit can be long and complex. They recommend carefully studying the requirements of the chosen country and starting preparations in advance to avoid delays and problems.
They emphasize the importance of accepting a new culture. It is important to find friends with whom this adaptation will become interesting and easy. It is important to be prepared for changes in lifestyle and open to new experiences.
Christian and Thor encountered a language barrier when they arrived in Russia. Until this moment, they had not studied Russian, so the process of learning a new language was more difficult. Start learning the language of your host country now to achieve maximum success.
When discussing the financial aspects of moving, they advise drawing up a budget in advance and providing yourself with sufficient funds for the first time.
MIU guests emphasize the importance of learning about the healthcare system and purchasing health insurance to cover yourself in the event of a medical need.
Finally, they remind people of the importance of maintaining connections with their home through the Internet, phone calls or periodic visits to maintain their identity and sense of belonging.
Deciding to live abroad is a big step that requires careful preparation and consideration of many aspects. Taking Christian and Thor’s advice into account, you can make your move abroad smoother and more successful, opening up new horizons and opportunities in life.
